S. Martinho de Dume Priestley Centre
On the Eastern side we find the Divinity School building, the Episcopal residence is located on the Western side, and, on the Northern side, the future building. This creates a symbolic void, in which the different stages of priestly life are congregated: learning, priesthood and retirement and seclusion at the end of life. The sequence of spaces was connected from this central point.
On the Northern side, light is absorbed through a uniform glass brick façade, while the South is protected by an irregular black façade – balconies and landscape – made of canvas and metal sheets. In the interior, the walking spaces acquire a uniform and dim light, while the rest embodies the light as intense mater, taking advantage of the contrasts of light and shade.
The diocesan centre has 5 floors, exclusively composed of a steel structure. Its large dimensions required strong and reliable lifting equipment, as well as skilled labour – namely structural assemblers and skilled welders.
